Hwarangdo Instructors Seminar, January 2010
The first Hwarangdo Instructors Seminar was held in January 2010. Master Kim opened his gym to local and interstate Hwarangdo instructors in an effort to teach the way forward for the future instructors of Hwarangdo. In true Master Kim style, the generosity of himself and his family was evident in the hospitality given to us to make us comfortable during the gruelling weekend.
The seminar covered many aspects of Hwarangdo from the underlying philosophies that guide us through our day to day lives to the fine details of Hwarangdo techniques and how to effectively teach.
I myself learnt a tremendous amount from the seminar and only wished it lasted a week rather than a weekend. Hwarangdo is a vast martial art that covers poomsae, one-step sparring, full contact free sparring (Olympic and Hwarangdo style), self defence and weapons.
The Academy has taken a tremendous leap forward in guiding the current and upcoming instructors to learn from a common base, understanding the reasons behind each technique. Anyone can throw a kick and a punch, but understanding the techniques in terms of which technique to use, why, how, when is most important to ensure that our students achieve both physical and mental training.
The seminar was a good opportunity to create and rekindle the friendships with other instructors both locally and from interstate. The Hwarangdo Academy is not only limited to the gyms in which we train, it is a community including all instructors, their family and friends and thier students, the students' families and friends, stretching from our Blacktown headquarters all the way up to Townsville. Maintaining and building on these relationships will ensure that Hwarangdo community will continnue to expand locally, nationally and even internationally.
On behalf of all attending instructors, our gratitude goes out to Mr Kim and his family for making us feel like a part of his family and your generosity over the weekend. Master Kim’s vision with Hwarangdo has always been to spread the knowledge through training and hard work. This is most evident in the training at every lesson. The seed of Hwarangdo has been planted and in time, through hard work, dedication and diligence from all instructors and students, Hwarangdo will grow stronger.
