Hwarangdo Instructors Seminar, January 2011
The 2nd Annual Hwarangdo Instructors Seminar was again held at the Australian Hwarangdo Headquarters in Blacktown, Sydney.
A total of 25 instructors from Emerald, Townsville, Mackay, Brisbane, Newcastle and Sydney attended the 2 day seminar led by Grand Master Kim. There was a noticable increase in the number of instructors attending this years seminar as last year's attendees remembered the hard training involved over the weekend.
This year's seminar initially focused on learning the technical aspects of each of the basics techniques and how to teach them in a way that is easy for beginners and other members to understand. It is this simple and effective teaching style that has created so many skillful Hwarangdo-ists over the many years that Grand Master Kim has instructed in Australia.
For all instructors attending, learning Grand Master Kim's techniques is an honour in itself - learning the way he teaches them is a privilege that we all will hold close to our hearts.
New instructors along side seasoned instructors pushed through the gruelling physical sessions of hand techniques, kicking drills, all poomsae up to Taebeak and all one-step sparring techniques - and that was just the first day!
Everyone settled in for the a Saturday night of Korean BBQ, a favourite with all, especially after such a hard day of training. A great night with terrific atmosphere, building and solidifying friendships with instructors from all over the east coast.
Before long, it was Sunday morning and saw everyone just as eager to start the day's training as was the case the day before. The second day saw free sparring techniques drilled individually and then again with a partner. Everyone enjoyed these sessions as, 'maybe' a little competitiveness amongst the instructors played a part. NSW vs. QLD, NSW vs. NSW, QLD vs QLD, everyone suddenly found they were a little faster, a little more physical. It is rare for most of the Academy's instructors to be in the same room, training together and the free sparring drills carried over into "I'll spar you!" matches after the formal session had ended.
From all the instructors who took part in the seminar and all who have trained and are currently training under you, thank you Grand Master Kim for imparting your knowledge onto us and pushing us to be the best we can be!
Thanks also to Mrs Kim for keeping the bunch of 'ugly' instructors fed and refreshed over the weekend and to all the instructors who travelled from QLD to make the weekend not only tough physically, but enjoyable socially.
Hope to see more instructors next year!
