Hwarangdo Christmas Party - 2011

The Annual Christmas Party was bigger than ever this year. Held at HRD Blacktown Headquarters on the 17th December 2011, this year was especially special as there was a theme set - ‘WIGS’. It was great to see everyone embrace being out of their comfort zones and also a treat to see the humorous side of some of the students of HRD. Over 160 people had turned up to the event and it was such a pleasure to see the HRD students invite their families and friends. It was truly an awesome time just to relax and enjoy everyone’s company, igniting the Christmas spirit.

Santa’s Helpers had met earlier in the afternoon turning the gym into a summery Christmas wonderland with lots of tinsel and decorations. The weather was great as it wasn’t too hot which was a true blessing from Santa himself.

The event started at 5pm this year with students arriving from all different HRD branches of NSW. Students did not come alone, having their families and friends come along with them. Everyone was amazed at the turn out of people; one parent had said ‘It is wonderful to have an event such as this for not only the students but also for the families to enjoy too’.

Many games were played on the day; Korean wrestling (Shi-gram) was a favourite for all to see. Whether you were a student, father or mother, everyone got involved. But the true beauty was seeing Master Kim with his true Master Kim slap to start each match. It was funny to see all the faces cringe with agony (in a good way of course).  Another favourite was tug-of-war which we played club vs club, with the losing club receiving the penalty of writing their names with their bums or to sing a song. Finally the most anticipated game of the evening was the ‘Pinata’, which was played in true HRD style. Students had to kick or punch the piñata, which we all soon found out how durable it was compared to previous years. But finally, once it fell apart, it became a mad rush to grab as many goodies as you could. Some students were kind enough to share whilst others were running around with their rewards in victory.

Every year, the HRD Christmas party is becoming bigger and better. More and more students are coming along with their families to enjoy a great time together. Christmas is not about presents, food or just to have fun. It’s about the family; unity and loyalty towards your families. United we stand, divided we fall.

A very warm thank you to everyone who contributed to help make this event such a success, whether by bringing in food, drinks or by helping to decorate the gym. Also, a very special thank you goes out to those who cooked and helped prepare the food.
